Summer Reading 2009

MALIBU HIGH SCHOOL – SUMMER READING 2009

INCOMING FRESHMAN:

Incoming 9th graders must read one of the following books:  Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson;  Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes; or A Lesson Before Dying, Ernest Gaines.

In addition, all incoming 9th graders must read one other book of their own choice.

Incoming 9th grade honors students must ALSO read Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger

INCOMING SOPHOMORES:

Incoming 10th graders must read one of the following books:  The Fortress of Solitude, Jonathan Lethem; The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd; Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger; or Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson.

In addition, all incoming 10th graders must read one other book of their own choice.

Incoming 10th grade honors students must ALSO read Demien by Herman Hesse

INCOMING JUNIORS:

Incoming 11th grade college preparatory students  must read one of the following books:  In Cold Blood, Truman Capote; Always Running, Luis Rodriguez; or  Plainsong, Kent Haruf.

In addition, incoming 11thth grade college preparatory students must read one other book of their own choice.

Incoming 11AP students must read ALL of the following  books:  Utopia, Sir Thomas More (Barnes and Nobles Classics); Frankenstein, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (Barnes and Noble Classics); and Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies, June Casagrande.  See your AP teacher or the Malibu High School web site for list of assignments.

INCOMING SENIORS:

Incoming 12th grade college preparatory students must read one of the following books:  The Big Sleep, Raymond Chandler; For Whom the Bell Tolls, Ernest Hemingway; or  Rebecca, Daphne DuMaurier. 

In addition, incoming 12thgrade college preparatory students must read one other book of their own choice.

Incoming  12AP students must read BOTH of the following  books: Catch- 22, Joseph Heller and Candide, Voltaire.  Additionally they must read ONE of the following  books:  The Princess Bride, William Goldman,;The Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy O’Toole; or A Prayer for Owen Meany, John Irving.   See your AP teacher or the Malibu High School web site for list of assignments.

NOTE:   Some of these books deal with adult themes.  For example, Always Running by Luis Rodriquez, included as a high interest selection, shows the dangers of drugs and violence through the author’s youthful experiences with gang life. Parents may wish to preview books and help students to select a book.
